Dubai is known as a place of many pearls. This is a reason why the traditional dhow sailing race was formed. Long ago, groups sailing in the seas of Dubai gathered pearls while sailing to prepare for the exchange in the market. They use these pearls to sell them in the Dubai markets. While sailing, the groups would do other activities such as singing, celebrating and competing while sailing home. Unfortunately, as time passed by, the groups of sailors had stopped; many of the boats were put to the sides. Many of the boats were unused, and the story and the celebration of the sailors all disappeared. This is when Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum decided to put the boats back to use. The first dhow sailing race was then started. The first event was made up of 53 dhows with great designs and lengths. Since then, the Traditional Dhow Sailing Race was included in the yearly calendar of the Dubai International Marine Club. The first Traditional Dhow Sailing Race was held in the year 1991.
